| Directions: Drive north on Highway 16 from Houston
for 4 km and turn left (south) on the Morice Forest Service
Road. Continue past the sawmills and follow the
Huckleberry Mine signs until you get to the 113 km sign. Turn right
on the Sweeney Main FSR. You will see the Sweeney East Rec site at
8 km and the Sweeney West Rec site at 11 km. Both are located on
the shores of Sweeney Lake. Just beyond are a set of two cabins on
the right. 1.6 km past the cabins, turn right along a tree-lined
road through a large cut block. The 4 km long road gets steeper
and rockier until 4WD is needed. If you continue down the main road,
you come to the shore of Tahtsa Lake. |
|
Features: An excellent destination
for 4WD trucks and ATVs. This area is designated motorized year
round. Stay on the roads to avoid damage to the alpine meadows.
Hikers can
get away from the motorized traffic by travelling into the steeper
sections or doing a crossover to Sibola Mountain. Sweeney is a very
popular site for summer skiing. Drive to the top and ski down large
snowfields.
Walk back up and do it again. There are numerous cabins and adits
from past mining activity to explore. Views of Tahtsa Reach, Rhine
Crag and the Kasalka Range
to the south are outstanding when the clouds part. This is a semi-coastal
forest and wetter and cloudier than other mountain areas. Because
of the long distance from town, you may want to camp overnight.
