Description: Easy hiking access to rolling alpine meadows on a muddy ATV trail that was built illegally. Suitable for families due to short distance and quick time to timberline. Watch for birds and small mammals. Wolves and grizzlies have been seen in the open. Excellent views of the Howson Range to the west. Excellent example of the damage done by ATVs.

Near: Telkwa

Difficulty: Easy

ATV damage to the alpine is sad
Location: Map NW
Rating:
Road Conditions: Narrow logging road from Telkwa to 28 km turnoff and good but narrow and brushy road to the parking lot at the bridge.   Trail Length: 20 minute walk from the parking lot to the edge of the cut block. One hour more to the lower alpine on a very muddy, torn-up ATV track and then add another half hour to the top of the first ridge for a total of one hour and fifty minutes. There are rolling alpine meadows for miles to the northwest from there. Plan to spend a long day meandering across the alpine.
Directions: Turn west from Highway 16 on to Hankin Ave at the lights in Telkwa. Set your odometer to zero. Drive over the bridge and bear right at the "Y" at 5 km. Keep left at the next "Y" and continue on the main Telkwa River Forest Service Road until you see the 28 km sign. Bear right and up the hill for 2 km then turn right and park before you get to the deactivated bridge. Cross the creek and walk 2.5 km to a cut block where you will see a "Y" in the road. Keep left and walk along the road over a few deep deactivation ditches to an old landing. The trail turns a sharp left up the hill.   Features: Easy access to a very large rolling alpine area. Don't bother bringing an ATV, you'll just add to the existing problem. Local LRMP regulations permit ATV travel only on established roads in the valley and this is an illegal ATV trail. This trail shows how much damage can be done by ATV travel in alpine and subalpine areas. Good views of the Howson Range to the west and the Microwave mountain to the east. Bring a map and choose a sunny day to make it easy to keep track of where you are and where the top of the trail can be found on your return. Trail in the timber is wet but alpine is a mix of dry and wetlands.
The alpine portion trail follows a sawtooth ridge

You'll have to step around deep muddy ATV tracks
