Description: An excellent and well-used trail to the alpine meadows to the west of Hudson Bay Mountain. Many good views of the mountain and access to numerous ridges. Note the red colour of the mud along the frail and of the rocks to the east. This can be a good trail for older children who do not tire easily. Watch for mountain goats on neighbouring slopes.
Near: Smithers
Difficulty: Moderate

Start of trail through the trees

Location: Map NW
Rating:
Road Conditions: All-weather gravel logging road - best to use on weekends and holidays to avoid logging traffic   Trail Length: 1/2 hour to cross the cut block from the parking lot and another 2-1/2 hours to the lower Silvern Lake at a leisurely pace.
Directions: From Highway 16 in Smithers, turn west on Tatlow Road at the south end of town. Set your odometer to zero. Follow the Ski Smithers signs to Hudson Bay Road (Ski Hill Road) Drive a total of 14.9 km from Highway 16, and turn left (west) on the McDonnel Lake Forest Road. Just before the 10 km sign on the McDonnel road, turn right at the Silvern Lakes Trail sign and drive on a short dirt road and bear right to a parking lot in a forest cut block. The trail follows the same old logging road up through the cut block to a landing. You'll see the start of the trail on the upper side of the landing.   Features: An old mining trail in good condition. You can ignore the signed trail that joins the trail and leads out to 8 km on the McDonnel road, it's a longer route. Fossils can be found on the slopes to the east and below the lower lake. The trail to the upper lake follows the east bank of the lower lake. There are extensive alpine meadows to the north and west with many wild flowers and streams. It would be possible for experienced hikers, with maps, to crossover to the Evelyn Mountain Trail or to the Toboggan Creek Road. There are good camping sites near the lower lake.
