Description: Also known as the Pinenut trail. A long trail to a relatively flat alpine area with good views. Watch for mountain goats. Best access to the trailhead is with four-wheel drive. A good but steep trail for pack horses, when dry. Recently maintained by local Forest Service. For experienced hikers, due to length of trail.
Near: Hazelton
Difficulty: Moderate

Location: Map NW
Rating:
Road Conditions: Good wide gravel logging road to the turnoff. Final 2.6 km is four-wheel drive only and will deteriorate without maintenance.   Trail Length: 6 km (2-1/2 hours) to timberline from the upper parking lot. Another hour to the top and lots of room for another 2-3 hours exploring the alpine. Be sure you can find the top of the trail on the way down. Use GPS or flagging if you are not sure.
Directions: Turn off Highway 16 at New Hazelton on to Highway 62 to Hazelton. Drive over the Hagwilget bridge, past Two-Mile to the Kispiox Road turnoff to the right. Drive 2.8 km and turn right on the Salmon River Road. Drive 14.5 km and turn right on to the logging road just past Pinenut creek. Two-wheel drives can drive 1.8 km and park on a wide landing. Four-wheel drives should continue on the same road for another 2.6 km ignoring roads to the right. At the first "Y", bear right and at 2.1 km, bear right again and continue to the parking lot at 2.6 km. The trail goes straight up the hill.   Features: A long trail with muddy sections at the start and at the top. Trail is in excellent condition with most windfalls cut by Forest Service crews. The lower trail through tall cedar-hemlock coastal forest is beautiful with a fairy-story charm. The upper sections are swampy and cross an old burned area. Many wild flowers. This trail is for hikers with stamina for the long hike.. Plan on an early start and a long day. No views until timberline.
No photos yet - rained out at timberline
