Description: Access trail to a series of lakes with fishing. Often used in winter for cross country skiing. Trail is entirely in the timber with no alpine views. Good early season trail when alpine trails are still plugged with snow.

Sandstone :Lake Cabin
Location: T33 on Map NW
Rating:
Road Conditions: Narrow logging roads. May not be plowed in winter to trail head.   Trail Length: One hour to Sandstone Lake on level trail . One hour more to Bud Lake over rolling hills.
Directions: Start at lights at intersection of Highway 16 and King St. in Smithers. Turn your odometer to zero. Drive west on King St. to Railway Ave. Turn left and across tracks on the Ski Hill Road. Turn left at 16 km on the McDonnell Lake Road. Turn right at 35 km on the Hankin Lake Road and then left up the hill at 39.4 just past the farm. Go left at 39.9 km and right at 43.9. Park at the landing at 45.1 km. Follow the ribbons down the slope west on the skid road. The trail starts about 100 yards off the landing and is easy to follow. After one hour, the trail crosses a large swamp to the cabin at Sandstone Lake. The Bud Lake trail turns right up the hill before the swamp and is ribboned in the open meadows.  

Features: Excellent trail past lakes, swamps and wet meadows. Good place to see a wide variety of wetland plants. Moose and bear in the area. Cabin at Sandstone Lake is suitable for year-round shelter. Please pack out all trash and replace any firewood you use. Excellent cross country ski area with extensive level wetlands, logging roads and rolling hills. Access in the winter is usually from the McDonnell Lake Road as few spur roads are plowed. Sandstone Lake area is designated summer non-motorized by the BV LRMP.
