Nine-mile mountain is in the distance

Location: Map NW
Rating: 3 stars
Road Conditions: Narrow logging road. Not suitable for large RV vehicles. Use on weekends and holidays to avoid active logging traffic.   Trail Length: 1-1/2 hours to timberline. Another hour or so to the closest peak and ridges.
Directions: Drive about 40 minutes north from Smithers on Highway 16 to the Suskwa River Forest Service Road which turns north from the highway next to a railroad overpass. Or drive south from New Hazelton about 15 minutes. The turnoff is not easily seen and on a curve. There is a sign to verify you are on the right road. Keep to the main Natlan Creek road for about 20 km and turn left on the Babine Trail road just beyond the Suskwa River bridge. Zero your odometer. Keep right at 2 km and stay on the main road. At 16 km, turn right and cross the Itzul Creek bridge. Keep right at the "Y" just past the 2 km sign and turn left at the next road and left again at the third road. (GPS UTM 604890 6135087) This 4.5 km long spur road has grass growing but is a good solid road. Drive to the end and park. The trail starts in the trees, next to the creek at the end of the road. (GPS UTM 604304 6139396) If you lose your way, follow the creek to alpine.   Features: Great views in all directions from a mountain seldom visited by hikers. This trail is recommended for experienced hikers who do not mind bushwhacking and can navigate using a compass if necessary. There are a number of ridges and peaks to explore and it may be possible to connect to Natlan Peak to the northeast. Nine-mile Mountain can be seen to the southwest. Thomlinson Mountain is to the northwest and Thoen and Blunt mountains are to the east. Watch for mountain goats.
