Description: An unusual non-trail that
wanders through dead timber of the Swiss Fire. A
one-of-a-kind mountain with all the sun-bleached
timber. It's
a small mountain but an important "nursery" for
mountain goats. Excellent views of the Houston area.
Lots
of wild flowers
in late July.

Trail Length: 1-1/4 hours to timberline and
another hour to walk to the summit. 1-1/2 hour from the summit
back to the parking place. |
| Directions: Set your odometer to zero at the
Houston Mall. Drive west on Highway 16 for 4 km and turn left on
the Owen Lake Road. Drive past the sawmill and turn left (east) on
the
Carrier Forestry Road at 32.6 km. Bear left at 39.4 km and turn left
(north) at 43.3 km. Drive to 46 km and carefully cross the broken
culvert. Continue to the end of the road and hike left toward the
high point on the ridge. Print out the Path photo above and take
it along. |
|
Features: There is no trail.
Follow the ridge. It's very open country with dead burnt trees right
to timberline. This mountain requires a bit of orienteering to get
back
down the ridge to your vehicle. If you need help, Frank McDonald
is the resident expert and he can guide you. See a link to his website
listed
at
the bottom of this page. Flowers, the open burnt hillsides and a
large herd of nanny and kid mountain goats are the best features.
Everyone should walk this mountain to see what damage a large forest
fire can do. |
