Description: Very scenic trail and easy walking once on top of the highest ridge. Watch for mountain goats. This is a great trail for a two-day overnight trip considering the large area to explore.
Near: Smithers
Difficulty: Moderate

View of Hudson Bay Mountain and Aldrich Lake to the NE

Location: Map NW
Rating:
Road Conditions: Logging roads - all-weather gravel   Trail Length: 2 hours up to timberline, 1-1/2 hours down. Another hour to reach the higher ridges.
Directions: Follow the Ski Hill signs from Highway 16 in Smithers. Set your odometer to zero at the highway. At km 14.9 on Hudson Bay Road (Ski Hill Road) , turn left onto the McDonnell Lake Forestry Road. At km 28.9, turn left on the McDonnell Lake South Forestry Road. At 30.2 km, turn right on the Denis West Forestry Road. Bear left at 33.9 km. The trail head is at km 39.7, on the left (south) side of the road. Watch for a small sign on the road bank. There is a small parking lot on the right side of the road. To avoid active logging trucks, use roads on the weekend or on holidays.

Features: Smooth trail surface but vague in spots. Excellent views at the top. The trail drops down at timberline and stays in the trees in a basin. At the top of the basin, you may climb up to the left (east) ridge. From there you can hike for hours but remember where to rejoin the trail for the descent.
The alpine area is the northwest edge of the mountain plateau accessed by the the Microwave Road to the south (Winfield Creek)

The trail comes through this basin. The "Nipple" is in the distance to the north

You can walk for miles to the south across rolling tundra
