Description: A long, steep trail to an excellent viewpoint. A trail that should be used more often - close to town and good ridge access to a large alpine area. It would be possible to hike through to the Silvern Lakes area to the southwest. For experienced and fit hikers. Here is a photo looking up the trail to the upper ridges. Trail is to the right.
Near: Smithers
Difficulty: Difficult owing to length, elevation gain and steepness

Location: Map NW
Rating:
Road Conditions: All-weather gravel road   Trail Length: 2-1/4 hours up to timberline viewpoint. Another hour to the top ridges.
Directions: Set odometer to zero to start from Smithers Main St. Head north on Highway16, turn left at 14.8 km on Evelyn Station Road, cross the railroad tracks and bear right. Turn left at 16.6 km and turn right on Raufer Road at 17 km. Bear left at 17.4 km and park near the Highways gravel pit gate. Avoid blocking access to the gate. Hike up the road to the gravel pit and walk up the hill at the far side of the pit. You will see an old logging road above the pit. Walk a total of 30 minutes from your vehicle until the logging road starts to level out and there is a small turnaround area on the right side of the road. The trail is to the left and often hidden behind brush. The trail is in excellent shape.   Features: An old trail that is in excellent condition. A good way to climb the northernmost ridges of the Hudson Bay Range. Watch for mountain goats on surrounding ridges. The views of the Rocky Ridge area, Hudson Bay Mountain north peak and the Bulkley Valley are inspring. For seasoned hikers - very steep in places. This trail must be used more or it will grow over in sections. The trail road access should be improved to eliminate the 1/2 hour walk to the trail head. Varying forest cover ranging from large hemlock and balsam to an unusual grove of aspen at timberline. Not much water available in the alpine.
