Description: A steep direct route to the western end of Ashman Ridge. Can be used to connect with the older trail at the eastern end of Ashman Ridge (not yet reviewed) Great views of peaks and glaciers north of Terrace, the Nipple and other nearby mountains. Watch for mountain goats on nearby peaks. A rough trail but well marked. Use care if you cross the scree slope at the eastern end. The connector is just beyond the scree.

Near: Smithers
Difficulty: Moderate

Turn right on the spur road
Location: Map NW
Rating:
Road Conditions: Remote logging road, not well maintained. Not suitable for large RV vehicles. Carry a saw of some type in case there is a tree on the road.   Trail Length: 45 minutes to the first alpine meadow. Another hour to the top of the alpine, 1-1/4 hour to come down
Directions: Follow the Ski Hill signs from Highway 16 in Smithers. Set your odometer to zero at the highway. At km 14.9 on Hudson Bay Road (Ski Hill Road) , turn left onto the McDonnell Lake Forestry Road. Turn uphill at the intersection with the Mulvain road. At 64 km on your odometer (past the 49 km road marker) bear right on the short spur road up the hill. Turn and park at the top. Walk almost to the end of the spur road. The trail is marked with flagging on the uphill side.   Features: A steep 45 minutes to the first view and it keeps getting better. Pick good weather for this trail. This end of the McDonnell Lake Road attracts a lot more fog, cloud and rain than other areas. The forest is old growth hemlock and scruffy balsam fir. The alpine meadows are wet and can be slippery, especially in rain. We haven't done the crossover yet but it looked fine from the top. We'll report on it later. Watch for marmots and Golden eagles. Summit is at 5600' elevation.
Follow the ridge east

Cross the scree to the connector at the last green patch
