Road Conditions: Narrow logging road is not suitable for large RV vehicles. Weekends and holidays are best to avoid logging traffic. Always pull over and yield to logging trucks.   Trail Length: 2-1/2 hours to the peak and 2 hours down. Take care following the trail through the dense meadows to make sure that you don't get off on a game trail. The trail is packed down and many windfalls are cut, the game trails usually are fresher.
Directions: Follow the Ski Hill signs from Highway 16 in Smithers. Set your odometer to zero at the highway. At km 14.9 on Hudson Bay Road (Ski Hill Road) , turn left onto the McDonnell Lake Forestry Road. Turn right (north) on the Cable FSR Road at 55 km on your odometer. Keep left at the first "Y" and right at the second "Y" and drive 4 km to a small hill at the far edge of a cut block on your right. Flagging on the right of the road indicates the trail start. The trail follows the edge of the cut block and then turns left across large subalpine meadows.   Features: The trail follows a series of subalpine meadows that range from very wet to dry. You could spend hours identifying all the plants on the way. Berries include raspberries, salmon berries, thimbleberries and currants as well as the usual blueberries and huckleberries. The alpine is a small peak but you can drop down and walk along the narrow ridge to the the west. If you are an expert hiker, you can use a map and turn left (south) at the end of the west ridge and scramble up a steep scree slope that connects to the Ashman West Trail. You will need to arrange vehicles to make the crossover and have some expertise in crossing loose, steep scree slopes. We have done the crossover in a day. It may be easier to hike from the west to the east.
