| Description: To the south, beyond the Francois
Lake Circle Tour, are the ranchlands and forests of
the north
shore
of Ootsa Lake. Across narrow Ootsa lake is Tweedsmuir
Provincial Park,
one of the largest wilderness parks in western Canada.
Ootsa Lake country is beautiful rolling hills, lakes
and always the mountains in the distance. You have
a good
chance to see wildlife at dawn and dusk. |
| Near: Burns Lake to Houston |
| Road Conditions: Vary from pavement to all-weather
gravel logging roads. Give logging trucks the right
of way and avoid them by travelling on the weekends
or on holidays. |

|
| Features: This is ranching
country. Large cattle and hay farms, remote locations and a tradition
of self-reliant
people who think nothing of living hours from town. Bring your fishing
rod and camera. There are numerous small lakes on the way, perfect
for fishing from a canoe or cartop boat. Don't plan on boating on
Ootsa Lake unless you have a large boat or considerable
experience
with
sudden
wind
and
waves.
Ootsa lake was flooded back in the 1950s to generate hydro power
for Alcan. The trees along the shore were not removed at the time
and are still a hazard for boating. Best to hire a guide who knows
the lake. See the fishing and hunting pages
for names of guides. Check the Accommodation
Guide for resorts on
the route. |

explore
on
the way.
Be sure
to fuel
up ahead of time- there are few service stations on our route. The
Ootsa Lake Circle Tour is an extension of the the Francois Lake Circle
Tour, and both may be combined. |
