There are museums on most of our towns. The enthusiastic staff will go out of their way to explain all the fascinating details behind artifacts. Knowledge of the history of our area will make you appreciate our land, our traditions and our people.
     

Hazelton:

The Hazelton Museum is located in the Hazelton Public Library Building, on River Road, in Old Hazelton. It is open year-round. The collection includes early pack-train and First Nations artifacts.
Ksan Village has a very important collection of First Nations artifacts. They are housed in the main building on the Ksan grounds at the entrance to Old Hazelton. The building is open year-round.
Smithers:
The Bulkley Valley Museum is open year-round and is located at the intersection of Highway 16 and Main St. in Smithers. The collection includes mining, forestry and native artifacts, fossils, and historical documents. Exhibits are changed often and are backed up by a excellent archive.
Telkwa:
Telkwa Historical Society operates a museum open during the summer months from 10 am to 5 pm, Tuesday to Saturday. It is located on Highway 16, next to the Post Office in Telkwa. The Society is also renovating the historic St Stephens Church across the street. Ask the Museum staff for information.
Houston:
Morice Bulkley Valley Historical Society has a collection of large implements, forestry and mining equipment but the collection is not yet open to the public. (see article)
Granisle:
The Granisle Museum is open during the summer and is located in the Tourist Information Building along the Highway. Mammoth bone replicas, domestic artifacts and mining equipment make up most of the small collection.
Burns Lake:
The Burns Lake Museum is open during the summer and is located on Highway 16 next to the Tourist Information Building at the west end of Burns Lake. The Museum is divided into the rooms of a home from the 1930s, Each room is filled with the furniture and appliances of the period. Fossils, marine history and minerals round out the collection. Farm and forestry equipment is stored in sheds outside. Excellent presentation.
Footnote: There is an excellent collection of mining and movie-making memoriblila at the small museum in Stewart, BC, to the north of our area. Open during the summer.
Another very important historical village is located at Ft St James to the east of our area. The staff are in period costumes of 1805 and the site is the second fur-trading post established in BC. A must-see for all visitors - excellent presentation, open during summer months
