Mark Perry – the Music and More
by Tammy Lipke

Mark Perry is a figure almost as familiar in Smithers as Alpine Al. Nearly everyone has either seen him perform, or at the least, heard his music. A staple of life in the Bulkley Valley, he’s also a lifelong resident.

Mark is a part of life here, and he’s got the ‘northern flavour’ to prove it. Want to know what makes that unique flavour?? Read on.

Mark was a common face around Smithers long before he made his first professional recording. He was born and raised in Smithers, on Alfred Street. He had what sounds like an idyllic childhood. “There was my family, and that was five boys,” he recounts,“...and at that time, the Walls (family) had even more. So I had this great neighbourhood, with all these kids around.”

His favorite memories of growing up centered on days spent playing road hockey on his street, sneaking into the Legion dances to listen to live music (his growing passion), and the occasional road trip to exotic lands such as Hazelton and Kitimat (a very big deal those trips were, too).

Hockey was a big part of growing up in the north. In addition to his days of street hockey, Mark soon began playing on local teams. “We would travel to Hazelton to play in the outdoor rink.” At that time, Smithers was the first community in the area to have an indoor arena.

Now, instead of playing hockey, he coaches local kids’ teams, passing the love of the game on to the next generation.
