Local Wood - World Class Guitars
by Tammy Lipke
The Bulkley Valley and Lakes District are known for talented local musicians. Soon, the region may also be known for quality musical instruments. Meet Mark Thibeault.

Mark is a recent newcomer to the Bulkley Valley. He worked for a Vancouver area guitar manufacturer for seven years. Three months ago, Mark relocated to Smithers, where his wife Jenny Lester's family lives.

Of course, work isn't easy to find here, so Mark went about creating his own job, doing something that he loves. From Dale Schneider's shop on Cottonwood Road in Telkwa, he's building very high-quality, solid wood guitars.

With help from Nadina Community Futures, Mark set up his own company, Rayco Resophonics. Mark is also in business with friends Dale Schneider and Dean Elmore. The three men create instruments and parts of instruments out of wood. The wood is purchased from local mills. Their current project is an order for 50 guitar tops, sold to a company in Australia!

The mould will keep the parts aligned
Through his own company, Mark handcrafts guitars. Not just any guitars, either, he's in the business of making some very special guitars, such as dobros, dreadnaughts, orchestra guitars, and steel guitars.

To begin making a guitar, Mark relies on partners, Dale and Dean, to cut the wood to a large size from the logs they acquire. Next, they split the wood by hand with a maul and a wedge. From there, they cut it into pieces of the approximate thickness Mark needs.

Mark makes his tops from adjacent cuts of a log, cutting and joining the two pieces of wood together so that they open like a book in what's logically called "book match". This ensures a matching grain on the face of a finished instrument, which is very important to its appearance.
