Steve Wilejto - Hockey Update
Steve Wilejto grew up in Burns Lake where he played his minor hockey until moving to Ft. St. John when an opportunity to join the Huskies presented itself. "It was quite a jump going from minor hockey where I scored quite easily - to triple "A," Steve remarked. When asked about pursuing hockey, Wilejto explained, "When Dave moved away, I began to take things more seriously, thinking that maybe I could do this too. I started to put up really good numbers and I thought I could do well at the next level." That next level was to be interesting indeed. In the complex world of junior hockey, anything can happen, and for Steve and Dave surprisingly, they ended up on the same team for part of a season. In those days, the Prince George Spruce Kings were playing in the Rocky Mountain League. The brothers found themselves reunited just in time for a run at the title. Asked about a highlight of that year, Steve recalls fondly that the Spruce Kings had reached the final against the Fernie Ghost Riders. He scored the overtime winner in the deciding game of the championship series! That was a proud moment for the Wilejto family.
Actually, these brothers have enjoyed many proud moments together, like high school graduation . Yes, even though they are three years apart, they actually officially graduated on the same day. Steve enjoys ribbing Dave about it. He chuckles as he explains the situation. "It's funny, we graduated on the same day because he was one P.E. credit short and he never officially got his diploma out of it. On my grad day, I went to talk to one of my Phy-sed teachers who also used to teach Dave. She gave him the extra credit and we graduated on the same day. I always bug him about that."

When asked to reminisce about his best opportunity to make it in the pros, Steve talks about his days with the Prince Albert Raiders of the WHL. In his first season there, he played centre and accumulated 30 points on 15 goals and 15 assists on a last place team. The highlight had to be when the management of the team chose Steve to be their representative for the "Most Sportsmanlike Player." Although he didn't win the honour for the league, it was something he was extremely proud, yet humble, about. The ultimate compliment came in the NHL draft that year. Wilejto was chosen in the eighth round by the Detroit Red Wings. For the history buffs, that was the same draft Detroit picked Petr Sykora.
