Steve Wilejto - Hockey Update
by Rolf Spaeti

This article contributed by Rolf Spaeti of BC Hockey Now. Thanks to Marc Weber of the UBC Athletic Department for the photo permission.

To a casual observer, watching the UBC Thunderbirds Men's hockey team compile a mid-season record of 4-9-1 , it would appear that nothing much has changed over the past few years. The squad remains mired near the bottom of the CIS standings with very little to show for their efforts. That's where you're wrong! Perhaps the two most misleading aspects of the T-Birds this year is their win-loss record , and their ability to compete. Milan Dragicevic's program seems to be taking hold. After that initial season where disappointing losses set the precedent, a new confidence has emerged. These guys have bought into the "team first" attitude. They realize that nothing beats hard work and tenacity on the ice, and dedication and camaraderie off the ice.

One player who fits perfectly into the mold is left winger Steve Wilejto who is enrolled as a "Fine Arts" student and makes his off-season home in Burn's Lake , BC. If his name sounds familiar, it is. Steve is the younger brother of Dave Wilejto. In hockey circles, this guy probably has the wildest collection of hockey sweaters going. His collection of jersey's includes one from Trail , Ft. St. John, Langley, and Prince George in BC, Raliegh ,Tulsa, Macon, Amarillo, Tupelo, Texas, Mississippi, Albuquerque, New Mexico and Corpus Christi - all in the United States. With five stops in Junior and another ten in Pro, it had to have an influence on Steve.
Growing up with an older brother playing hockey did have its moments. With extremely supportive parents who drove relentlessly to hockey practices, games and tournaments, this game became a way of life for the entire family. Both brothers concur on that point. Currently spending the Christmas Break together in their hometown, the bond between these guys is obvious. When Steve was asked about his influence from older brother Dave, he was quick to point out that he was always encouraged to enjoy the game and to have fun while he moved up through the system. Dave always said, "If it isn't fun, it's not worth doing." When Dave was asked to elaborate on his advice given to younger Steve over the years he replied, " I always told him to stay on an even keel, to expect the unexpected in the world of hockey." Coming from a classy guy who puts people first, that's a reality check for anyone playing the game. Dave says he has no regrets when discussing his hockey career. Now that he runs his own sporting goods store in Burns Lake, he has instilled his values and his lessons learned into his business. " It's not a heck of a lot different running a retail store, a lot of what I learned in hockey can be applied here."
