Walk for Your Health

Walking is good for you. It works your heart and lungs and tones the muscles in your back and stomach. After all, humans are designed to walk.

Over two million years ago, our ancestors stopped swinging from tree branches and started walking on two legs instead of four. Since then, our feet, knees and hips have evolved for walking and running.

Our stomach and intestines work best if we walk regularly. Our neck and head are specially adapted to remain steady while jogging so that we can avoid motion sickness.

Human beings are the only large animal species on earth that walks on two legs, but has no tail for balance. Instead we have a special set of muscles to help keep us upright when we walk and run... your cute tush. Your posterior is not really a seat cushion or there to look good in jeans, it's vital to keep you from toppling forward when you walk or run. No other animal is as well suited to walking and running long distances as we are.

Park a car too long and it deteriorates. It's the same for people. Spend too much time on the sofa and your body goes downhill. Get out and walk and your body will thank you, it's doing what it is designed to do.

If you are less than thirty years old, healthy and not overweight, you are probably fit and ready to walk or run. So go for it.

If you are over thirty or overweight, and have not walked further than to the car or fridge in years, start small. Each of our northern towns has a system of trails within town boundaries that are ideal for an easy walk of ten to sixty minutes. Search for easy trails here
