Slim Down, Shape Up
by Jim Easterday

Are you concerned about your weight? Is it difficult to walk a mile? Is your weight affecting your health?

It's easy to be overweight. We have an unending supply of delicious, inexpensive food available in the grocery store. At work, many people sit in a chair, or in the cab of a machine, with little chance for hard physical labour that may raise a sweat.

In the evening, it's fun to sit on the sofa, watch TV or a movie and enjoy chips or ice cream. The abundance of food and the lack of exercise are the perfect recipe for gaining weight.

According to the BC Health Guide, "...the higher your weight, the greater the risk of some diseases, including high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, stroke, osteoarthritis, some cancers, and type 2 diabetes."

Too much weight can be hard on your knees and feet. If you are 40 pounds overweight, it is the equivalent being at an ideal weight and carrying a backpack all day loaded with 40 pounds. Lose the weight and you have taken that heavy backpack off.

We all want to avoid the downward spiral where too much weight keeps us from exercise which in turn makes us couch potatoes which results in more weight which keeps us from exercise which keeps us as couch potaotes which... You get the picture.

Your breakfast and your coffee break at ten o'clock in the morning keeps you fueled until noon. Your lunch keeps you going until five or six o'clock when you are ready for supper. After a large supper, the main meal of the day, it's time to sit in front of the TV or computer for the evening with snacks until 10 o'clock. Many of us go to bed with a full stomach.

We burn off the calories from breakfast and lunch because we are active during the day, but our large supper and all the evening snacks may not be consumed by active work. Instead our evening meal and treats may go to our fat cells and add to our waistline.
