Hike for the View on Barrett Hat
by Jim Easterday
If you are looking for a great view of the Bulkley Valley and a trail easy enough for small children and seniors, consider Barrett's Hat, near Hungry Hill, north of Houston.

It's an easy 45 minute hike from the road on a good trail - no fear of getting lost.

Once on top of this rock, you'll be able to see south to Morice Mountain and Nadina Mountain near Owen Lake. To the west is the Telkwa range, with the Bulkley River in the foreground.

Look north and you can see the Onion and Hudson Bay Mountain near Smithers and beyond that, Brian Boru peak near Hazelton. All the hill needs is a revolving restaurant on top!

You can see the rock face as you walk along the trail
Directions: Drive on Highway 16 to the top of Hungry Hill, about 12 minutes north of Houston. Turn west on Barrett Hat Road. (Don't be confused - there's also a Barrett Station Road, closer to Houston that goes to the Houston Airport, but we don't want that road.)

Drive less than a mile to an intersection of the Barrett Hat Road and two smaller roads. Park near the intersection - there's lots of room to park. The Barrett Hat trail is the small bush road that goes straight ahead.

Beginning of the trail is straight ahead at the intersection

As you walk, you will see some logging debris at the first of the trail. The trail winds through pine forest and goes downhill slightly. You won't be able to see Barrett Hat until you are close to it.

Kids will enjoy the puddles and the open bush along the trail. There is very little vertical gain in the trail so that the kids won't tire too much before they reach the top.
