Nativity Scenes in Burns Lake
by Diana Roberts
Christmas is a time when we get together with friends and family to celebrate. The first thing that comes to most children's minds about Christmas, is Santa Claus and presents. They know who Santa is and that he comes on Christmas eve. We all know, of course, that Santa is a fairly modern part of Christmas.

Christmas is really about the birth of Jesus Christ. As the story goes, the Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus in a manger, which was the only place they could find to stay for the night. On this night, many people came to celebrate the birth. They were shown the way by an angel.

In modern times, people set up Christmas trees with presents under them and lots of lights. They also display nativity scenes to remember the birth of Christ. In many homes, this is a very special tradition. You will see nativity scenes not only in homes, but in churches and even outside, which is where Jesus was born.

There is one church, in our community, that has a very special way of celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. Each year, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, at Francois Lake, sets up a display of nativity scenes. In previous years, it has been on the first weekend in December, but this year, it will be on the last weekend before Christmas.

Not only are there over 50 different nativity scenes, but there will also be members of the church playing the parts of Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus.
