Easy Ways to Cut Food Bills

Don't keep potatoes and onions side-by-side. Both give off a different gas that shortens each other's storage life. Keep them in plastic bins in seperate corners of your kitchen.

Both need cool dark places.Always leave any produce packed in a mesh bag in the same mesh bag. Examples are garlic, onions, grapefruit and potatoes.

Mesh bags are best

Lemons are sensitive to too much cold and should be kept dry and away from anything that gives off a strong odor as they will absorb it. Keep them away from ethylene producing produce as well.

Other ways to preserve your fruits and vegetables longer is by canning or freezing them. The Internet is full of ideas on both of these methods. A friend who grows his own vegetables likes to place his carrots right side up in a big bucket of sand in his own cold room . He swears this keeps them crispy and fresh for months.

Cut asparagus ends off and stand them in water

When you're paying eleven dollars a kilogram for a red pepper, it would be nice to keep it unspoiled for at least a few days. Keep it in a plastic bag in the crisper drawer and it should do just that.

There is nothing sadder than having to throw unused, spoiled food into the worm bin. Following these guidelines will hopefully help you to stretch that grocery bill just a little bit further.
