Keeping Her Sister's Memory

Karen MacArthur is not new to the pain of loss. Before she was born, the family lost a sibling to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. When Karen was 11 years old, her mother passed away from breast cancer.

More recently, she lost her older sister and great friend, Sheryl Smith (Wayland) in December of 2000 to lung cancer.
It could wear some down, but not Karen who has just completed hosting the third annual Sheryl Smith Memorial Ski-A-Thon in Houston.

Both sisters loved the outdoors, Karen started her debut on cross -country skis as a child, while sister Sheryl began as an adult. It's still hard for some of us to believe that Sheryl, an active canoeist, skier, hiker, biker and healthy person, is gone. It doesn't make a lot of sense.

Sheryl Smith was well known in Houston and it was she that coined Houston's first logo: "Where the welcome is warm and the wilderness beckons." She purchased the Paradise Sports store in 1990 and often found herself in the middle of many meetings for different clubs and organizations. She was a key personality in the Houston Merchant Association, was a charter member of the Morice Mountain Nordic Ski Club and helped with the Figure Skating Club, Safe Grad and the Chamber of Commerce to name a few.

The community was first asked to give on behalf of Sheryl when she first discovered her illness. A benefit auction and dance was held by Tony Loder and friends and enough money was raised for Sheryl to try an assortment of immune boosting treatments, none of which seemed able to slow down the cancer.
