Meet Houston's First Female Mayor
by Debi Smith

It seems like only yesterday that the world of politics was strictly male oriented. Women weren't able to vote until 1924, and it has taken from then until November, 2002 for Houston to have its first female mayor.

A one-on-one interview with Sharon Smith gives us insight into what that could mean for a 100 pound female to step into the shoes of past mayor Tom Euverman.

Reporter: Can a woman be a better mayor than a man?
Sharon: I don't think your capabilities are if you're a man or a woman. A lot of Tom's (Euverman) and my view points are the same, but I think I bring a more positive way of approaching things. Anything that I've ran for or applied for, I've never ever presented myself because I'm a woman, but because I was capable of doing the job.
Reporter: But you also don't have to be the breadwinner in your family.
Sharon: I'm lucky that way. I can devote my whole day to the job of mayor - I don't have to go to another job, I can get focused on this activity.
Reporter: Being a mother must bear some influence?
Sharon: (laughs) You run a household. You delegate, you organize, you schedule - it sets you up for being able to share a work load. Being in a house of males - with three sons and a husband, I've learned how to deal with male issues. I was raised with only a sister, my Mom and Dad, so basically a female dominant house.

All Sharon wanted at this age were two front teeth
Reporter: So you've seen both sides. I don't think there is a lot that you can't do. You've been on some pretty rugged camping trips -you and Tim are among the very few hikers known to bushwhack from Eutsuk into Tesla Lake and into Troittsa from the Tahtsa Reach.
Sharon: I grew up in Nipewan, Saskatchewan knowing farming and hunting. Yes, I was a real Tom Boy.
Reporter: And you go hunting with Tim and your boys?
Sharon: (pointing) That's my moose hanging on the wall!
