Seniors Do It Themselves

So what keeps the seniors fundraising these days? Their minds are set on building retirement housing so that they will not have to move to Smithers, Burns Lake or further from their families for assisted living quarters when they need it.

As senior Noreen Scott put it, "There were a few of us decided to build our own since the government wouldn't build one for us."

It has taken five years to raise $150,000 but they've done it. Now, with the recent donation of five acres of land by local brothers John and George Groot, the seniors are getting ready to build again.

Although the final vision for all that property has yet to be decided, the Senior's Retirement Housing Society wants to start with six independant living quarters that can be changed into intermediate care facilities when needed.

They hope to include a variety of social groups that may want to build to their own housing needs: Possibly a group home for the mentally challenged, or a women's hospice.

They have collected from private donations and other clubs like the Royal Canadian Legion and donations in Memory Of, annual auctions, and most recently from the East Indian community who put on an International dinner fundraiser and a samosa sale to contribute $5000.

Besides their own luncheons and breakfast sales, the seniors also collect money by servicing the Forest District's recreational campsite areas. This requires organizing teams to drive as far as Chapman and Twinka Lake.
