Schuss Boomer

Gold, silver and bronze medals and prizes (one for the best holler!) are awarded.

New this year was the Toni Madison Best Team Costume award that was won by the "Team Arrrr"- full of Pirates!

The Schuss Boomer has seen a few changes over the years - it was reduced from a two day event to a more effective and power-packed one day race. From 1984 until 1994, when the event changed hands from the Ski Smithers Corp to the Smithers Ski Club, the Saturday was the "Fun Day" with teams and costumes and the Sunday was the "serious" race day. Everyone donned racing suits and used their best secret wax to try and beat other people in their age group down the mountain.

The "Blind Bunny " somehow made her way to the race start

Age groups are still in 5 year increments in both men and women's divisions. .Previous Schuss Boomer events have had 139 racers participating and speeds of 116 km/hour. Although he has occasionally shared the winning speed with other racers, Eric Person continually remains the man to beat.

Waiting to race- discussing secret wax, maybe?

The top female racer this year was Lauren Stuart at 109 km/h, although in previous years it has been Eric's wife, Heidi Westfall, also a supporter and organizer of the event.

Now that I've survived the Schuss Boomer, I'm thinking of getting my own secret wax for next year. I wonder what I'd look like in one of those tight little lycra suits? Best to just start with the wax, I think.
