Schuss Boomer

The "Ever Hopefuls" took it this year being only .36 of a second out! Now that's hard to beat.

The Schuss Boomer started in 1984 when then Ski Smithers employees Jo-Ann Maxwell and Gary Conway thought it up as a fun recreational promotion for the ski hill.

In those days, many of the season pass holders were participants in the adult Masters Race events. They approached Masters enthusiasts Bill and Dawn Remington who were quick to volunteer themselves as Course Engineers.

There are few recreational downhill races left in North America due to over-regulated insurance policies. But the first race was authorized while under the management of John Currie who was satisfied that every precaution and safety requirement had been fulfilled. One year, the race was run as a Master's sanctioned event and racers came from all across Canada and the United States to compete.

In the beginning, any monies raised from the race merely covered the cost of the participant's t-shirts and prizes. Today there are over sixty sponsors and this year's event raised almost $6,000 which was donated to the Ski Club.

The funds support the Junior Alpine and Nancy Greene programs as well as supply timing equipment, fencing, gates, flags and other costly equipment.
