Tales From the Telkwa Range
by Debi Osborne
It is one of the largest playgrounds for snowmobiles. Miles of untracked powder, rolling hillsides and breathtaking scenery keeps the Telkwa Range bustling with activity on any winter day. But in the summer, when most of the snow has given way to spongy moss and lichen, when the vast expanse seems alive with multi-colored flowers and rarely spotted wildlife, the Telkwa Range remains quiet and unused.

Fabulous view points
The Houston Snowmobile Club has an ATV (all terrain vehicle) trail leading from the Cabin parking area up to and around the top of these mountains and many members use it, being ever mindful to stay on track to keep any natural vegetation damage at a minimum. But due to an increase of caribou in the area, the Ministry of Environment has begun to discourage any motorized vehicle use on the range. Without an ATV, one faces an approximate ten mile walk or bike ride uphill to where the best scenery is.

Different terrain at every turn
Wanting to spend an entire day touring the alpine rather than getting to it, we rented a helicopter and the pilot whisked four of us across miles of Crown land west of Houston, eventually dropping us off in a large flat meadow close to our destination. We grabbed our packs laden with cameras, binoculars, lunch, survival kit and bear spray and began the heart-pounding adventure we would never forget.
