The Francois Lake Loop Excursion
by Debi Osborne
The fastest way to drive between Houston and Burns Lake is by taking Highway 16. Most of us have done it many times. But if you're NOT in a hurry, there is a very appealing alternative called "The Francois Lake Loop" that takes roughly an extra 40 minutes to complete, ending at the same destination! That is, of course, if you don't stop at one of the many attractions found along the way.
Owen Lake at 48 km - 'catch a 20 lb char
Beginning in Houston, you head slightly west of the town centre to the Morice River Forest Service Road. Turn south onto this road. You will be passing by the entrance to the Canadian Forest Products mill (on your right) and then the yard of Houston Forest Products on your left. Say goodbye to the paved road for awhile.

For the next 20 km you will be driving almost parallel to the mighty Morice River, a destination for sportsfishers from all over the world. When you reach 19 km, you will begin to notice miles of dead trees still standing amidst lush, new growth, a reminder of the Swiss Fire that ravaged this area in May 1983. Stop at the pull-out and read about the fire at the kiosk provided.

The Route Is Well Marked
At 48 km, there is a local favorite campsite at Owen Lake where the breathtaking scenery is as plentiful as the fish.

Once you reach 53 km, there will be a road called the Owen East Forest Service, so turn left onto this. This road will eventually turn into Colleymount Road, which takes you to Burns Lake, so stay on it. For 6 km, you will twist your way through what we refer to as "Grouse Alley" on your way to the "head" of Francois Lake. Keep going straight through the well-marked crossroad. Only 77 km to go.
