An Artist's Journey - Laara Ashlie
by Debi Osborne
Laara Ashlie is a talented local Houston artist that has been painting since she can remember. "It just was always there," she says.

Over the years, she has sold, or given as gifts, literally hundreds of works of art bearing her signature, which has prompted her recently to catalogue them. One glance at her clipboard tells her the date each painting was finished, and the name of the owner.

With her first public art show coming up in Smithers January 8 - February 2, 2002, she is going to have to gather at least 21 of her most prominent works for display.

Laara at her work-desk
Her living room looks like an art gallery. Understanding relatives and customers have returned her original canvases for use at this show. Samples from the various creative stages of Laara Ashley's life - the velvets of the seventies, seascapes and surrealistics of the eighties and the more recent abstracts- are scattered about, making it hard to concentrate on just one at a time.

Even without a practised eye, one can see how Laara's work has evolved, how the lines have loosened. Shapes have become more fluid, there appears to be less of a need to be so finite. Every piece seems to hold a part of Laara's growth.

"Fade Into Winter", available on notepaper
A faint smell of fresh incense comes to me as a recording plays tinkling wind-chime sounds. A bird softly chirps. It suddenly seems so peaceful here. My eyes roam back to the gentle swirl of seascape colors as Laara's quiet voice recounts the journey that has brought her here, to Houston.
