If The World Had More Juanitas...
by Debi Osborne
If the world had more people like Juanita Nuyens, it would definitely be a better place.

Juanita works as a licensed practical nurse and health care worker at the Smithers Bulkley Lodge. When her niece, Leslie Ann Monague, informed her she had raised $600 in a swim marathon for dialysis machines for her Christian Island Reserve, Juanita recalls, "I was so proud of her."

Determined to walk from Houston to Smithers
By chance, Juanita happened to attend a Fund-raising function that same week where money was being raised for a local boy struggling with cancer. With the story of her niece still fresh in her mind, Juanita made her way on to the stage and helped earn close to a $1000 by having her head shaved on the spot!

Juanita raises money by having her head shaved
Back at work with a scarf tied around her bald head, Juanita became aware of the staff wanting to build a special -care addition to the Bulkley Lodge. Patients with dementia were becoming agitated by the an increase in residents at the Lodge, from 50 to over 70. If the dementia patients had their own housing, it would be easier for staff to work with them.

Fund -raising ideas were discussed but nothing concrete formed. Again Juanita remembered her niece's money-raising venture.
