Irrigation Lake

In 1984 the Lake underwent extensive "rehabilitation." Chemical treatments (safe for humans) eliminated the growth of coarse fish and a $40,000 program included the construction of a water-permeable rock dam and fish barrier, the introduction of shrimp transplant and stocking of rainbow trout.

A new dock, change rooms and outdoor washrooms were built in 1989 and more recently, fine sand was added to the beach and shoreline.

Today there are two hiking or cross-country ski trails cleared by Houston's Youth Experiential Learning Crew (see related article below). To the right (west) side of the lake, the trail is 1.5 km and the left trail is 2 km, both are loops with signs posted to bring you back to the parking lot.

You will find the park well used in both winter and summer. Ice fishing is fantastic here! As is skiing, snowshoeing, skating and hockey. The grassy foreground is a popular picnic spot and the shore is a regular draw for young mothers and small children as the lake has a shallow beach.

Across the waters you will see the Rock Nest Ranch or the Rough Acres summer camp. "Electric propulsion motors" only are permitted on the lake, and canoes and paddle boats are popular. Although Houston now has an indoor summer pool, the lake is still used for scuba diving lessons and the basics of swimming.

No matter what you call it, either Dunalter or Irrigation, this lake has seen most of us come and go and will hopefully continue to do so long after our new Houston Leisure facility gets built. After all, it's free, out in the fresh air, and it has a really interesting history to it.
