Indra and Her Piano

Indra also loves to sing. "It's a little easier to be able to sing well once you've played an instrument," she says, "because your ear knows the sound."

Lorena McKennit is her favorite vocalist and although Indra has yet to add singing to her list of accomplishments, I have no doubt that day will come.

Miss Egan has composed one song on her violin and two songs on the piano - the one called Romance in E Minor won her an award.

As an avid listener to CBC news, Indra e-mailed the radio station asking for a special song of Brahm's to be played for her father's birthday. When the President of the Prince George Symphony heard the story, he sent tickets for the family to come and watch the Mother's Day symphony where, during his introductions of the musicians, he made mention of Indra and her awards along with saying he looked forward to the day when she is either playing as a guest musician or with the orchestra. After the symphony Indra met the guest musicians as well as the conductor.

Partially owing to the fact that she reads Clavier magazine (Clavier meaning keyboard in french she tells me), an academic magazine written especially for professionals and teachers, Indra can easily converse with visiting musicians at an amazing level for her age.

Indra is also much in demand at local events and functions. A keyboard was set up for her at the recent Canada Day Celebrations and she has played for fund-raisers, the Houston Music Festival and the Seniors on various occasions.

But aside from all that playing, all that practising and all that hard work, Indra is still very much a nine-year-old girl-one that can say "Oh Daaaad..." with just the right whine to make us remember her true age, if only just for a minute.
