Indra and Her Piano

Stephen Egan says he believes one of the reasons that both children have such a keen interest and talent in the arts is likely because they rarely watch television or play video games.

Indra's brother Ovid is learning piano and violin as well. Indra is his teacher. He practices everyday alternating between the two instruments and has won two piano awards.

As for Indra, she practices two to three hours a day. She is preparing herself for a new piano instructor in Prince George who she will travel to see for one hour every two weeks.

Indra is going into Grade Six piano and has pre-learned all the pieces necessary and has started practising Grade Seven piano as well. As her father puts it, "You don't need a teacher to hold your hand while you're learning the song. What they're there for is to perfect it, to tell you what to do to make it better."

Indra hopes to complete both Piano Grades this year, which will enable her to enter Provincials, then hopefully on to her dream of going to the Nationals.

It's pretty stiff competition though, her father adds. For the violin there are maybe 12 to 15 competitors, but with piano there could be up to 150. Tall odds, but they don't discourage Indra.

She seems ready to take it all on. And if she doesn't make it? She thinks being an English professor might be "cool"."I love writing stories and anything to do with literature," she tells me.
