Taylor Made Hockey Rink Wins
by Debi Smith

The joke is it's "Taylor-Made" and the Taylor family of Smithers recently won Hockey Night In Canada's Best Backyard Rink contest.

Alan didn't know that wife Kathy had entered their 148' by 72' skate arena in the contest until a picture of it appeared on television as one of the top five across Canada.

On March 11, 2006, Alan, Kathy and family learned along with the rest of Canada that their Canyon Creek Arena was Number One.

A key distinction is it's authenticity. It looks like the typical water-hose rink except their water comes from the creek which runs at the edge of the property. A series of homemade hockey rinks over the years and about 300 hours of work preceded this 6th rink which has a warming "hockey shack" and floodlights for night skating.

It has two doors that open on opposite sides of the rink for opposing teams. Teams are decided by separating hockey sticks into two miscellaneous piles. Wherever your stick ends up decides if you're a light or dark jersey player. Grab a hockey shirt hanging in the shack and let's go!

The Taylor family

It is a labour of love that begins after Remembrance Day services, when Alan and seven to eight workers made up of friends and family start laying out the boards to fasten back into place on their posts.

Alan relies a lot on his offspring: John (19), Jolene (17), Justin (15) and Jennifer (14). Of course Kathy is always there, running hot chocolate, water, sandwiches and whatever else is needed to the hearty volunteers.
