Ian Bush and the RCMP

A reporter with the Globe and Mail wrote that he was told by the Vancouver RCMP media liaison Staff Sergeant John Ward, " ...the public doesn't have a right to know anything." So who are our police answerable to?

They are paid out of provincial coffers, but when pressed, Nathan Cullen, our MP for Skeena-Bulkley Valley publicly feared the loss of his career in politics if he was to stand up to or say anything against the RCMP. Even Stockwell Day, the Federal Public Security Minister, says he will wait until the RCMP have finished investigating to see why it has taken them so long to complete the process.

Accountabiliy is exactly what the Bush family is asking for in a lawsuit they filed against Constable Koester, Wally Oppal, the BC Attorney General, and John Les, the BC Solicitor General.

Andrea Patrick says " My sister (Renee) and I have a new life mission. Out of this, our family would like to see some changes made to RCMP training, requirements to become a police officer and the investigation process. An RCMP officer killed my brother and another RCMP officer is investigating him. We'd like to change that, too. We'd like to see an independant investigation team like they have in Ontario."

In Ontario, a Special Investigations Unit is a civilian law enforcement agency that looks into all serious injury or death of civilians by police. Criminal charges can be laid by this unit, which uses another special division of the Ministry of the Attorney General to prosecute. "Once we get some answers and a little closure with the Ian part of this, then we will get to that," says Andrea.

The answers are going to have to come out eventually. The issue is not going away and if anything, the memory of Ian Bush is stronger than ever because of the delay.

"Justice Delayed is Justice Denied" was the banner carried on a peaceful march of Ian Bush supporters who closed down the highway for a demonstration march from downtown Houston to the cemetery.

People in town wear rubber bracelets that read "In Memory of Ian Bush - Yeah Hey!"
Andrea concludes, "Did they think they could just make him disappear?"
