Scary Halloween in Houston
by Debi Smith
Halloween stories are usually scary and this one is no exception. The year was 1995, first year for the new RCMP Sergeant Joe Aerssens at the Houston Detachment.

The day was October 31st, and as darkness fell, so did the temperature. The night was cold but that didn't stop over one hundred local youths that decided to go on a three-hour rampage of destruction, menace and mischief.

No chances are taken anymore - statues are plastic-wrapped for Halloween
Under the cover of evening, pre-school goblins and fairies began their usual door-to-door race for candy, some as early as 5:30 p:m. By 6:30, the RCMP had to block off the road leading up the hill to Mountain View Drive, right in the middle of Houston's "suburb" area, because a battle had begun!

Teenagers were pummeling vehicles with eggs. By the time the police arrived, the number of teens had swollen, some blocking the sidewalks, more hiding in the surrounding trees and bush and they were throwing rocks, sticks, even human feces at anything going by! Joe says, "I'm not sure who they were mad at, but they were a pretty angry bunch."

Demanding they stop did nothing but fire the mob up. Two windows on the police suburban got smashed. The kids set dumpsters on fire and rolled one down the steep street at Mountain View. Word spread the area was not safe and Halloween for the little ones ended quickly. But the war raged on.

Halloween can be a scary night
Part of the mob ran through the park and set out to the RCMP building to hurl rocks there. A window got broken and dents can still be seen around the metal-frame door. The Fire Department building was given the same treatment.

The siege continued until after 9 pm, when the mob dispersed into thin air. Although the police have their suspicions of the youth involved, the night was dark and it was impossible to identify. To date, no charges have been laid.
