Northern Girl Guides

The National Guiding website states that their program is a way for girls of all ages to develop strong principles which will "guide" them through their lives.

While the principles have remained unchanged since their inception in 1910, the ways that they are achieved have.

The badge program is still a popular way of rewarding the girls for their accomplishments, but it is no longer a race to see how many one girl can get. The units constantly face new challenges together so that everyone earns a badge.

"Girl Guides has really evolved but the outdoors has always been its main component," continues Christine, "and it's always been the girls' preferred component." Because of this, the Leaders try to plan as many outdoor meetings as possible. Christine tells me about a future meeting that will be held at Riverside Park where they will build a campfire, have flashlight games and make Cinnamon Apples.

The Guides also focus on "Home" meaning the girls learn skills which will enable them to do things like cook, sew and even repair appliances. Last year, the Brownie program was revised to better suit the girl's needs. "It happens about every six to eight years." There are revisions to badges (for example the cooking badge saw some revision because today we don't cook the way we used to) and new ones added - like one for working with computers.

In the past 3 years, Guiding has concentrated on Risk Management and Christine feels they are the "leaders" in the field of identifying risks and working to eliminate, minimize or transfer them.

Their manual describes scenarios and how to deal with them as well as giving them check lists to take for every outing. "It really does make my life easier in the long run. I know when I go to camp using this document, I'm prepared."

Now that was something I remembered about being a Guide. To always "Be Prepared."
