Dome Mountain
by Debi Smith

If you love something intermediate for riding, hiking or biking then Dome Mountain, a part of the South Babine Mountain Range, is for you.

Only 20 minutes from Smithers, it draws people on foot, wheels, and horses and in the winter becomes a favorite escape for some of the more experienced snowmobilers and cross-country skiers in the Bulkley Valley.

To get there, travel south on Highway 16 from Smithers for 6 km. Turn left on Eckman Road ( Babine Lake Road) until the very prominent Onion Mountain is on your left. Just past the intersection of Eckman and the Old Babine Lake Road you will see a parking lot on the right at 19.6 km, perfect for at least 10 vehicles with trailers.

A large sign in the parking lot that says "Dome Mountain" tells you this is the right place. The trail head is just to the left of the sign... or you can drive less than one kilometer down the Canyon Creek Forest Service road and the Dome trail starts on the left. The trail is over 12 km long but at a moderate grade for hikers.

The Dome Mountain Trail also turns left off of the Canyon Creek Forest Service road.

If you use the connecting trail from the parking lot, turn left at the "T" with the old Dome Mountain Trail. I went right the first time. Mistake number one on our first visit. It was the third mistake that was the worst. More on that later.

Dome Mountain is designated for winter motorized or summer motorized use on the hard-packed trails.
