CHAR for Houston Music
by Debi Smith
Northern BC has many summer music festivals. The largest is the annual Rock Fest held in Vanderhoof where headliners like Credence Clearwater Revival and Colin James light up before a pasture full of fans.

The Midsummer Festival in Smithers attracts a close second for numbers and puts on a varied collection of singers and dancers from all over British Columbia.

For Marla Mize, her last two music festivals in Houston had nothing to do with head counts or attracting large numbers of people from other communities. Her whole focus was getting local people who enjoy music together to listen, to appreciate and to participate. Big emphasis on the latter!

The festival is called C.H.A.R. which stands for Country, Hip Hop, Alternative and Rock. Basically anything musical with "taste" goes on stage.

The Four Seasons Park in Houston is the perfect spot for such an event. There is plenty of room to spread out and no interference from traffic. Both the 1999 and the 2002 festivals were held there and this will be the spot again for the 3rd annual CHAR Festival in July of 2003.
