Cycling With the Comparellis

The first major cycling trip for the Comperellis was in 2002. Paul made a tag-along bike for his youngest daughter Jo, using his back tire as her front tire. Jo carried her stuffed puppy Buddy along for the ride and joined the family trips.

Gheri occasionally joined in, but mainly drove the truck and camper to recreation areas and tried to have meals ready and waiting for the hungry foursome.

In 2003, the first highway trip became a reality as the twins and Paul left Burns Lake and rode to Sunwapta Falls, BC. Mother Gheri and daughter Jo arrived to pick them up to drive them to Vancouver where the three cyclists continued their journey down the coast to Creston City, California. After that they returned to Sunwapta and finished bicycling into Jasper.

In 2004, two days after school was out for the summer, the road trip continued from Jasper, travelling south for 7 weeks. They went through the Kootenays into Cranbrook, then across the border into Montana.

At age 15, the twin girls and their father made their way up the Hoosier Pass (elevation 11,542 feet), down into Yellowstone National Park and finally into Kansas. Then in 2005, picking up where they left off, this time with Jo riding behind Paul on a tandem bike, the family continued making their way east. "We never really plan anything," admits Paul, who tries to keep things fun.

There are limits. Near Virginia, while biking in temperatures close to 50 degrees Centrigrade, they decided enough was enough. Reaching the east coast could wait.

The rest of the month was spent slowly making their way back to the west coast using trains and a rental van, becoming regular tourists and visiting places like Mt. Rushmore, Jo's favourite part of the trip.

Once back in Canada and rejoined with their mother Gheri, they hopped on their bikes and rode to San Francisco.
