Medieval Europe Comes Home

Each Shire holds 2 coronets (events) each year. There are archery, light fighting and heavy fighting competitions. There will be an Arts and Science portion where awards may be given for things such as the most authentic costume, or the best Celtic knot displayed as a design on either embroidery, jewellery, wood carving, metal work, etc.

There is a Gamesmaster who researches Medieval games and past times, then teaches the games and encourages their play.

Michelle is an excellent seamstress and makes all her own costumes. She also teaches Western Martial Arts which is the battle style of An Tir. Fighters use steel and fiberglass weapons to recreate the "Arte of Defense" as it is thought to have occurred.

They make their own shields and suits of armor, which must be tested and approved before use. "It's very strict," says Michelle of the rules they must follow. "Every fighter must also be a paid member of the society which provides them with insurance."

Tir Bannog now has a two-storey Tudor "hotel" built for their well-attended events. It sleeps 26 people, many who come from Kitimat, Terrace, Quesnel and Prince George. It hosts a bar named The Wolf Head Inn.

The annual August long weekend event in Clinton BC is Michelle's favourite. It attracts 2,000 people to its castle built from railway ties and "I get to see everyone I haven't seen for a year."

Much work goes into making all of the props - right down to the tents that look like miniature kingdoms. There is so much to get involved with, whether it is dance, calligraphy, cooking, metalwork, stained glass, brewing, literature, etc. As Michelle said, "if they did it (back then), somebody in the SCA does (it now)"

Always looking for new members, Michelle can be reached at home at 847-9518 or by cell phone 877-9608. Their next event is at the Glenwood Hall October 22, 2005.
