Medieval Europe Comes Home

The SCA was started in 1966 in Berkeley, California by a group of science fiction and fantasy fans interested in the idea of medieval re-creation.

The idea has since been embraced in Europe, Africa, New Zealand and Australia, the Middle East, United States and Canada.

Although they don't try to re-enact specific events from history books, they do try and stay in-period during the various events they attend. Each chapter has a person named the Herald who helps them research a persona to become.

When Michelle attends a function, she is no longer the rural route mail delivery mother of seven from Smithers. She becomes her Ladyship Josephine Blackthorn, from the year 1550, born of a high-society French woman and a Scottish ship Captain. She has her own crest which has been approved and registered with the SCA Board of Directors.

She maintains the position of "Seneschal" which means that she is responsible for the Shire, and "Marshal" where she must oversee all combat related activities. There are 15 members in the Smithers Shire of Tir Bannog - a number that has been steadily growing since 1996.

"It's big people playing," Michelle tells me. "Anyone can do it." Even the kids get into the spirit of things, becoming Pages where they train under another person.

The SCA feasts are a "hands on" affair since there were no forks and knives for the regular folks in those old days. What child wouldn't love that? The SCA website even has a Medieval Teen Page.

"I have made so many friends through this," says Michelle.
