Womens Institute - a Tradition
by Debi Smith

The official creed of the Womens' Institute reads -

"Keep us O Lord from Pettiness.
Let us be large in Thought,
In Word and Deed.
Let us be done with fault finding and leave off self-seeking
May we put away all Pretense and meet each other face to face
without self pity and without Prejudice.
May we never be hasty in Judgement and always be Generous.
Teach us to put into action our better Impulses, straight forward and unafraid
Let us take time for all things
Make us grow calm, serene, gentle
Grant that we may realize it is the little things that create differences. That in the big things of life we are one.
And may we strive to touch and know the great human heart common to us all, and O Lord God, Let us not forget to be kind"

That's the official creed of all Womens Institutes (WI), written by school principal Mary Stewart of Ohio, sometime before her passing in 1943. If you are a woman under the age of forty, you may not have heard of these wonderful Womens Institutes, an organization created many years ago as a basic lifeline of communication and support among rural farm women.

Your local Womens Institute (WI), under the umbrella of the Associated Country Women of the World, and the Federation Women's Institute of Canada is part of the largest organization of women anywhere. It has grown into a powerful force that has been responsible for major reforms affecting both agriculture and the quality of families lives in many countries. It's the "Women of the World", doing what they do best - caring for each other and their countryside. "For Home and Country" is the WI motto and their list of achievements is long, not to mention impressive.

Communities as small as our South Hazelton, Rose Lake, Quick and Southside ( Francois Lake) each have a branch of the WI. They have helped to build, support and maintain some of the basic necessities such as libraries, community halls and senior's centres. Even in the face of declining membership, the WIs are still very much alive, and making continual progress at the local, national and world levels.
