Telkwa Signs Are Back
by Debi Smith

We've all driven past the magnificent round signs of the Telkwa Village, but take a closer look and you will see that the past, present and some of the local scenery have all been skillfully crafted together in one beautiful logo.

Recently, vandals have defaced the Telkwa signs but the Village has reacted quickly and soon the signs will show Telkwa pride better than ever.

One of the two original Telkwa signs
The call for Telkwa's first logo came during the term of then Mayor Maxine Douglas. "It was sometime in the early eighties...," she recalls, saying that council wanted something that portrayed as much local flavour as possible - the convergence of the Bulkley and Telkwa rivers, the world-famous rock bluff that used to have three bridges anchored to it, the abundance of coal in the area that once saw a booming coal mine, the past and present forestry industry, the importance of the railroad opening in 1913, and the incorporation of the village in 1952.

A tall order to fill, but as luck would have it, local artist, Rob Chaplin, caught wind of the project through his father, Murray Chaplin, a maintenance worker for the District at that time.

Rob presented council with a drawing of the sign you see today. All talk of tendering out the project or holding a competition was ended. The design was exactly what they wanted.
