Sea Cadets

To ensure everyone is on the right course, the Regional Representative for the Northern Sea Cadets, John Nosotti, drives from Prince George every Monday to help keep the Burns Lake Corp afloat until enough civilian instructors can be trained to take over.

John has an extensive military career in the Militia and the Cadets, having worked with the Canadian Cadets for 14 years now.

It is amazing the amount of dedication that people like John and current Navy League (parent) President Alex Bergen have given to these young people. (Alex doubles as a Scout Leader as well.)

John Nosotti - regional representative

Each Sea Cadet eventually steps into one of four distinct trade groups. They are Boatswain (navigation, boat motor), Gunnery (bush survival, map and compass) Music (band, drill) and Sailing (powerboat and Canadian Yachting Association sailing levels). But no matter which group they end up in, there are four main excursions planned for every year. First is a sports weekend in either Kitimat or Prince George, then a trip to Lake Babine for boat practise and training, another to Victoria or Comox for testing, and a few days in Prince Rupert for Naval and Military History and a visit with the Coast Guard.

All cadets get to practise at marksmanship, an "added bonus', quips one cadet. Approximately 5000 sea cadets a year participate in summer training camps from Comox, B.C. to St. John's Newfoundland. Their transportation and uniforms are provided, as are their camp clothes, food, lodging. They return home with a small pay packet at the end of the summer.

Learning new skills

As they get older and learn more skills, cadets like Josh VanTine can go on to participate in sailing with the Tall Ships or the Coast Guard.

Josh is now enrolled in the Royal Military College in Kingston Ontario- a first for the Burns Lake Corp and a real feather in everybody's beret.

Josh's parents have been very supportive during his time with the cadets - helping with fund-raising, training and weekend camps.
