Sea Cadets
by Debi Smith

The Village People had us all singing

"In the Navy Yes you can sail the seven seas,
In the Navy, you can set your mind at ease,
In the Navy, Come on be bold and make a stand,
In the Navy, In the Navy.
They want you, they want you, they want you as a new recruit!"

They made sailing and patriotism sound so enticing.
Now boys and girls aged 12 to 18 have the chance to see what joining the Navy could be like, even though they live in Burns Lake.

There's more than one way to get in a boat

Every Monday night at 6:30, the Margaret Patrick Memorial Hall begins to fill with the eager faces of the # 320 Trinity Sea Cadet Corp. Because it is early in September and instruction has recently started up after a summer break, not everyone is in uniform. But tonight measurements are being taken, and uniform orders are made up.

Initiated in the 1960's, the corp has seen its ups and dips in numbers, hitting a recent high of 35 youngsters, all interested in learning about naval traditions through various activities on and off the water. They are instructed in sailing, naval communications, shipboard life and seamanship, boat repair, marine engineering, tall ship training and ship deployments.

The rest of the program involves everything from bushcraft, citizenship and drill to marksmanship, physical fitness, sailing, and leadership training.

Whew! That's a lot to pack into one night a week.
