The Endako Loop
by Debi Smith

If you're ever in the Endako area looking for somewhere to go for the day, then doing the Endako Loop with a side trip to the Black Point Trail could be for you. The trip includes a perfect picnic spot- a great lake view complete with fire pit and table.

This hide-away is an ideal place to fish or to enjoy a sunny day on its wide stretch of beach. The water is the typical Francois Lake temperature - cold even in August, but getting in slowly on a hot August day is never a problem.

The Endako Cemetery is worth a look

To get there, go east past the Endako Pub for less than 1 km, where you turn right onto the Endako Mine Road. On your left you will see the white-washed fence of the Endako cemetery that opened in May 1928. In 1914, at the peak of the railroad construction era, Endako was home to 1,400 people. Many were buried in a gravesite just north of town until underwater springs forced its closure. The graves there, as well as any found on any road right-of-ways were brought to this new cemetery, a project yet to be completed.

Next you will pass the impressive BC Hydro structures for the Endako Mine. You probably heard the buzzing from these power lines while stopped at the cemetery. Follow this paved road 4.4km to the turnoff for Glenannan Road. Turn left here. (If you turn right, you will end up at Endako Mine which does give tours on certain dates. Best to check at the Fraser Lake Info Centre before heading there .)

At the next fork, keep left again- following the signs to my favorite restaurant at Stellako Lodge. (A right turn at that intersection would take you to Molly Hills golf course and the Francois Lake and Birch Bay resorts.) Ever had lobster tail in a shrimp sauce embedded in puff pastry? You'll never be the same after you have.

The Stellako Lodge- rack of lamb anyone?

Their restaurant is a classic BYOB establishment, complete with cabins to crash in afterwards. But they're only open for dinner so keep going for a total of 4 km and turn right onto Nithi Road. Up until now, everything has been well marked by road signs. Now it's time to pay attention!

Take this dirt road for 1.9 km and then take another right onto Dahlgren Road. In no time you will be looking at the eastern end of Francois Lake. There are a few houses here, so slow down.

A little past the houses, you will cross over the Nithi River bridge. You used to be able to fish the mouth of this, but it is closed now. It's still a good place to get out and wander for a few kodak moments. The kids can try and catch the little fish here with their hands.
