Francois Lake Soap Maker

“It is important to make sure that both ingredients’ weights and temperatures are accurate,” Liz-Anna notes.

She uses a website which provides ratio tables for soapmakers although she goes on to say that after awhile she learned what works and what doesn’t.

For about three years, Liz-Anna made the soap for her own satisfaction, giving bars to friends and family who gave her positive feedback and encouraged her to sell the soap.

Finished soap with homemade wrappers

One of the reasons Liz-Anna’s soap is so popular is that it moisturizes the skin. A number of different factors contribute to this result. “Olive oil is an excellent moisturizer. It not only helps skin retain moisture, it also draws moisture from the air,” she notes, adding that she uses olive oil, coconut oil, and palm oil. Coconut oil, when used in the right quantity, is another good moisturizer.

In addition to choosing moisturizing oils as ingredients Liz-Anna also uses a process called “super-fatting”. This, simply put, is increasing the amount of fat added to the mix which in turn produces an extra moisturizing soap.

Soap made in the shape of a loofa

Liz-Anna also explains that, unlike commercial soap, her product contains glycerine. “Glycerine is a by-product in commercial soapmaking and is removed most of the time,” she says. “But it remains in homemade soap and is an emollient, which moisturizes the skin, too.”

While the actual soapmaking requires careful and accurate measurements, blending the scents for it is creative. Liz-Anna says she likes to experiment with different blends of essential oils, making notes so she can reproduce the same effect if she is happy with the result.

One scent blend, however, was an accident. Liz-Anna had four different essential oils left over, so she tried blending them together. The result was something she calls “Eastern Influence”, an exotic scent which continues to be a favourite with her customers.
