Bill Konkin, Hockey Referee
by Bonny Remple

Hockey. To many Canadians, it’s both a sport and a passion. Each winter in the BC northwest, players of all ages spend much of their spare time in arenas. Some dream of one day playing in the National Hockey League while others are simply there for the love of the game. Bill Konkin has a different dream.

Although sixteen-year-old Bill often spends up to 12 hours a day on weekends at the Tom Forsythe Memorial Arena in Burns Lake, his ambitions are quite different from his peers. Bill no longer plays hockey. Instead he is an on-ice official who hopes to become a referee in the Western Hockey League.

At a time when some minor hockey associations are finding it difficult to recruit young on-ice officials, and despite the fact that they are paid for their time, Bill’s interest in refereeing is something of a rarity and much-appreciated.

He spends an average of nine hours daily at the arena on Saturdays and Sundays. He officiates one game then has a break. Rather than leave the premises, he and another referee stay to watch other games, evaluating junior referees and giving them helpful tips.

Bill also helps off-ice officials, the timekeepers and scorekeepers, giving them advice on how to record some of the more complex penalties. For example with a game misconduct, the player receiving the penalty is ejected from the game while a second player actually serves the time.

“At first, I started refereeing as a way to earn extra pocket money,” Bill says. “But that first year, there were only two other junior referees so we did a lot of games and we had a lot of fun.” He was only 11 years old at the time and was playing hockey at the PeeWee level.
