Bill also helps off-ice
officials, the timekeepers and scorekeepers, giving them
advice on how to record some
of the more complex penalties. For example with a game
misconduct, the player receiving the penalty is ejected
from the game while a second player actually serves the
time.
“At first, I started refereeing as a way to earn
extra pocket money,” Bill says. “But that first
year, there were only two other junior referees so we did
a lot of games and we had a lot of fun.” He was only
11 years old at the time and was playing hockey at the
PeeWee level.
